View Full Version : Have you settled on a main yet?

Good gawd I'm having nothing but trouble deciding.

I tried looking at various polls to pick a class that wasn't popular but there's a fairly even spread out there.

Maybe I'm not looking in the right places but there doesn't seem to be many Marauders. That's kind of tempting.

Every class I've played so far is fun, but I really need to stop making a bunch of alts and just focus on one.

Anyone else struggling with this? How did you decide?

Nope. I envy those people who can just read the descriptions of the classes, pick one and level it to cap in a game. I always end up floundering and creating multiple alts. I have done it in pretty much every game so far. Eventually I settle on one to advance.

So far I have a Squig Herder (Hasting), Magus (Sneev), and Witch Elf(Cathula) that I am leveling up. The Squig because I like Archery classes, the Magus because it looks the closest to my DAOC favorite of the Dark SM although its not a great match, and the WE because every time I play a game like this I find myself wishing 6 months down the road that I had rolled up a Stealth class of some sort :P

Right now the competition is between the Magus and the Witch Elf, with the Witch Elf winning for the most part :)

In pretty much every game I play, the first character that I pick will forever after be my main. It isn't even much of a choice for me. I like to play defensive tanks, my Warhammer miniature horde is led by the Black Orc Malglum Leadmangler, and I needed a shield. Black Orc plays just like I expected it to and though I am tinkering with a Chosen, the Black Orc seems a perfect fit. Surprisingly, it doesn't seem gimp yet (which may make it less than perfect fit).

Tough decision for sure. I read through all the descriptions and a few classes sounded cool, I started out with shamman and tried a few others. By the time around level 10 I was having huge second thoughts about main, but what really sold it for me was once I got a few more levels I went out and RvR'd. By far the most fun I'd had with my class yet, plus got to see how things would begin to play out with my class. I know T2 won't reflect strats at T4, but if ur just in T1 I think everyone is trying to sort things out and therefore you won't get a true feel of game play till you pass the "herd" and get out there and see what its really about. So my advice is hold strong in one till you can at least have some solid play in T2.

This is a sure sign that it's a fun game :)

And I am having some of that problem too. I want to play all the classes!

Me picks one class and den plays just dat charactur to watevur da levul caps is. If dere is nuttin ta do once me hits da cap, den me may try outs alts, but me main has always beens da charactur dat me starts wit. It jus werks out dat way. Fer me dis is almos always a tanks type charactur, sumtimes a hybrid tanks like a Thane, sumtimes a straight defensive tanks.

I'm a level 10 Black Orc and I am having a lot of second thoughts. I was a zerker in DAOC. I think I might try a caster class. I have a hard time leaving my 10 though because I have limited play time, so I want to have at least on T4 character eventually.

Yes I am having this issue also :P I have my 15 Chosen, 10 Squig, 8 Shaman, 6 Black Orc, and now I've been playing Sorcerer. So far I like the class.. I was just worried about how Chosen would turn out in end game so I decided to poke around. I had 4 lvl 70's in WoW and a couple 60's, my most played class easily being my Druid.. unfortunately there's no druid class in WAR, so I tried going resto with Shaman.. I just don't think I want to be healing in yet another game. I seem to gravitate to ranged DPS. My dwarf runemaster in DAOC was lots of fun, along with my warlock, mage and shadow priest in WoW.

I picked the class that I felt had the potential to be the best RvR soloer. (But that would still have the capability of contributing in groups -- actually I think every WAR toon has this . . .)

<fingers crossed> that I was right ;)

I never have alt-itis, really -- I go the direction I think will satisfy me and I see it through. Really, you can't finally judge what a class will be like until late game, so giving up or getting discouraged too early is usually a mistake ;) In DAOC I really only had three main toons -- Kestrel for about a year, then Hasil for years, then Bardif for a year+ I had some alts to help with stuff, but only played them to help out my 8-man in getting stuff done.

I rolled a Sorceress first and didn't enjoy it too much. But that could have been due to being completely new to the game and not knowing what to do. Sorc is on the self atm but that could change soon.

Then I rolled up a Zealot and second time around the starting areas was better but I am having concerns in the T2 Scenarios as it seems that whenever I go into Phoenix Gate (I really hate the Troll one) I instantly earn a huge target over my head and die constantly. That is reminding me too much of WoW bg'ing as a Holy Priest. Everyone expects you to keep everyone alive while the other side makes it their primary mission to turn you into goo ASAP.

So then I went to a different server and rolled up a Witch Hunter. I really like my WH. I just have to giggle every time she puts her gun to the forehead of something and pulls the trigger!

Back to PT and rolled a Chaos Chosen. Still too low to come to a decision as to wether or not I like the class.

Squig Herder I've tried but only just. Not enough time spent to know...

DoK as well. This was something that I might give some more time into because of my Zealot. On my Zealot I find myself constantly on the front lines, even when I try to hang back, and that usually gets me killed pretty dang quick, so maybe a melee healer like the DoK? Seems to me the DoK can dish it out to some extent as well as do some healing... Again, haven't played my DoK enough to learn their mechanics. I dunno, but I'll give it a shot.

Thought about a Shaman... but not sure I should roll up even another character before giving the others a shot.

/sigh

I think I am lucky that I haven't rolled more Order chars.... I could easily like those too and be eternally stuck leveling up forever!

One thing I do know... No.. and I mean I have no desire whatsoever, now, or in the future, of rolling a Bright Wizard.

My choice was between a Witch Elf and a Sorceress, but so far the WE is my main though after standing around doing nothing during a keep defense, I am beginning the wonder if that was a good choice. Hoping someone would get close enough to lob a scimitar at them is not much fun.

Pre-beta I was interested in greenskin classes alot due to the looks and feel of them. I was l leaning towards choppa or black orc (as I've played tanks/dps tanks in DAOC and WOW...and their is no real steather in WAR, but WE/WH are fun). During guild beta I gotta to try several different classes and ended up really liking 3 destruction classes. Black Orc, Shaman and Sorcerer. (And Witch Hunter on order).

So I kept with my decision to have the black orc as a main, with shaman (healing) as my "first/primary" alt then sorcerer will be an eventual "second alt" fighting for time with a Witch Elf probably (I like the Witch hunter better...but stupid thing on wrong side).

I have always had a real hard time picking a main, however I usually end up focusing on one primary character & then leveling up alts when I run out of content to do on my "main".

I got a VERY brief peek into the open beta to at least give me an idea of what classes I wanted to try. I like being the "bad guy" so I was thrilled with the old crew picked Destruction. Made my picks that much easier!

I've been playing my Warlock (http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Khadgar&n=Sylinrul) as my main for the past 4 years in WoW so I kind of wanted a change of pace. Plus I have some concerns about how viable being a caster is going to be in this game with resists being tossed around on gear right out of the gate. I'm also tired of dying in <10 seconds in any PvP situation.

Initially I was torn between the Chosen & DoK. There's others that sound interesting, but those 2 seemed the best fit to me. The first character I rolled was a Chosen, I immediately loved the zone and the feel of the class. I like how there's a hint of Norse history in the Chaos faction, makes it feel a bit like home. The aura's are fun, but they can be a pain when you tap non-agro mobs . I also was annoyed that I would use an entire bar of action points only to get a mob down to 1/4 health and then stand there doing nothing waiting for it to regen....

So... I switched to the DoK!

I personally can't stand the Dark Elf starter zone, I dunno what it is about this place, but I just do NOT like it. I love the DE architecture, armor & weapons, but everything else about it I hate. I REALLY can't stand the way the race runs, shoulders all puffed up like they're some big bad bodybuilder, when they probably weigh about 100 lbs. soaking wet!

I decided to try to ignore the aspects I didn't like because I found that the class play style was actually quite fun! I had plenty to do during a fight, when I wasn't attacking I was healing, which allowed my action points to regen, so I never had the down time I experienced with my Chosen. The dps was also slightly better so I was able to kill faster AND much more efficiently since I could heal myself as well. The class feels almost overpowered with how easy it is to heal yourself in combat. I've been able to take on -1 level champion mobs with minimal difficulty and 4 or 5 regular even con mobs without worrying about dying... either of those situations would've been impossible for my Chosen.

Despite how much fun I had playing the DoK I found that I kept missing my Chosen. I also had a lot of concerns about being a primary target so readily accessable to the enemy because I was on the front line with the melee.

So I switched back to my Chosen and tried to gear the crap outta him. I grinded up to RR10 in the Tier 1 content so I could earn some respectable armor & weapons to equip him with. Now that he has a pretty nice 2 handed axe he's able to kill things at a pretty reasonable rate imo, so that there's not much, if any, down time between mobs just as it was with my DoK.

I think the biggest thing that appeals to me about the Chosen is that he get's to look like a tank SHOULD look! Big 'ol honkin shield with thick metal armor from head to toe, or if you go 2 hander, a huge executioners style Axe or Sword that says, "you get in range of this baby and I'll split you in two!"

I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty much settled on the Chosen as my main for Warhammer finally.

I'm sticking with my Sorceress as my main and my BO as my alt.

I had mine chosen (on both sides) as soon as they released the class descriptions and cemented the decision by my time in beta.

Growlitch
09-25-2008, 04:13 PM
This has always been hard for me except for WoW. I got into the Beta there and played around with them enough to know a rogue was it for me. I confidently rolled up my rogue on day 1 and leveled Rictus to 48 and then waited for others to catch up to him. Rolled a Hunter for an alt to play during this time and it just clicked. Switched to the Hunter and still wound up one of the first to 60 in thralls hammer on Growlitch.

Time passes and I don't have the time or desire to spend 40-60 hours a week playing. I didn't get in the beta here and it is driving me nuts on what to play because I am keeping it casual now and that means starting over even in the teens hurts big time in keeping up with folks.

Chose a sorceror as my main and I really like him in a group. I love AoE damage. I have a Marauder too though that I log on when i only have 15 minutes or something like that and he is level 6 and a whole lot more fun to play when i have to do anything solo. With the marauder AoE abilities later on, it is tempting to switch but if I do there aint no going back until I finish him to 40.

Summary: Have you decide on a class? ---Umm...Nope.:D

Normally I'm an Alt-o-holic, but with 2 kids under 4 years old and a stressed out wife I currently have limited playtime.

With this in mind I'll focus mainly on Thuk the Black Orc. I plan to have one main alt though - Ralo, the Zealot. I always need a healer to play in case a team I am in is lacking a heal-spammer. ;)

The one thing I can count on when I start a new game is that eventually I'll end up playing just about every class at some point. I always have a tough time deciding on one main because I like the variety and experience of different roles. Until they make one class that can do everything well, I'll always have a horde of alts behind maybe two or three "mains" hehe. What I play tends to change from day to day too, just because I get bored easy...

Anyways, since I did not play in the beta I have made 18 of the classes thus far just to check out how they work... they're mostly not a very high level, but there's a few that are around 8 or so. My highest currently is the sorceress at 12, which is one I knew I'd like since the runemaster become my favorite by the time I quit Camelot and I used to have some of the dark elf army miniatures...

So, to sum up, no I haven't really picked a main yet. But then again, I like to experience as much of the game as I can so I usually don't like sticking to only one :)

I originally tried a Magus. He only is lvl 8 but what I am finding out is I do not have much survivability. Maybe that changes at some higher levels, but right now I can not kill stuff before it reaches me, I can not slow my target down, and once they reach me, I can not get away. That's not to bad for PvE, but RvR I'm dead.

I started up a Black Orc last night and I am liking him (or they an it?) a lot better. On my magus, I would be hard pressed to deal with 2 or more even level mobs, while with my orc I just kill one then the other. In RvR it usually took 2 or 3 people beating on me to take me down. Damage still isn't the greatest, but that will improve with a few more levels (only lvl5 right now).

So far i am having a lot of fun with the first character i picked which was a Sorc. Casters dont seem to be that squishy in this game so far which is good for soloing :)

In WoW, I started as a warlock and loved it, but then quit and restarted as a prot tank, and got stuck raiding in that role for almost 3 years now, so I'm well burnt out for tanking. So to change it up, I was waffling between zealot and sorceror/ess, and went with zealot because I like Chaos. So far I'm loving it. Healing in RvR and scenarios is exciting for me and I like the look of the character a lot. I have a terrible time giving any focus to alts, so I'll likely only have this zealot to the cap.

I'm a huge target, but the survivability is pretty solid if i load myself up with HoTs and shields.

The Zealot is my main, and I'm in love. :)

I'm wrestling with alts a bit. I first planned to make a Chosen Alt. But then, I felt like the mechanics of a Black Orc might be more my style. I tried a Magus and they were kind of fun. I've also thought about a Squig Herder. I won't be making all of those, in fact I'm really only trying to think of one alt. Just not sure which way I'll go on that yet.

My main is a Marauder but i my rl son rolled a shaman and i have been helping level him and love shamans!! I have not played a type of healer before except for a bard on Hib/Guin before i found my home on Mid/perc. Marauder will definitely remain my main but i will have a shaman alt for sure!! Broggle the healer who'd a thunk it

I just started a Zealot last night, and I think I'm in love. In my previous lives, I've been a damage dealing caster, but I was ready for a change.
So now I have my Marauder, who is great for getting up close and personal. I really love the Convulsive Slashing and Impale abilities, and I can rack up some damage.
But, now that I've played a healer for a few hours, I kind of like the excitement of trying to keep everyone alive long enough so that they can bring the slaughter.
Choices, Choices. Maybe I'll just play 2 mains, and then I can be ready for anything!

Ya know... I posted this big long thing about how much I was enjoying my Chosen. But over this past weekend I grew a bit bored and kept eyeing the big flashy frost spells the Sorcs were slinging around so I decided to give one a try. I very quickly fell in love with the class!

Now my only problem is that I can't stand two things about the Sorc, one is the way they run all puffed up like they're big & bad. The other is that I really don't care much for the Cold One mount they put out. I was really looking forward to getting a Chaos Charger when my Chosen hit 20, but if I switch to the Sorc I won't be able to get one. Decisions decisions, why are all the classe so much damn fun?!

I can honestly say I have not picked a main yet...The closest I have is my Magus which I do enjoy. It just is not as exciting as I was hoping it would be :(

I LOVE Zealot. But in every game I get stuck as the healer. I am sick of always having to be the healer :( So I am putting off playing her right now.

Witch Elf is very fun. I love sneeking behind enimy lines, taking out a few healers/squishies, then dieing in a blaze of glory only to run back and do it all over again.

Now for what I want to try....

I still want to try Sorceress more. I got one to 9 in CE/CB and found it fun. There just seems to be a bunch of them around which makes me not want to play it as much.

DoK I got to 11 in PW and I LOVED it....but again.....its a healer and I don't want to get stuck having to heal. I do enjoy healing though...I just don't want to get stuck in that roll.

Several people in my guild seem to really enjoy Marauder. I am VERY tempted to try one now even though I had no plans to before.

Oh and last but not least. Squig Hearder, looks fun. I had 2 level 70 hunters in WOW (one horde one alliance) I love pet classes and bows. They look very cute too :D But umm...I played hunter a lot in WOW and if I play another hunter like class ever again my husband will tease me relentlessly

The perception I've gotten about the DoK as a healer is that they make great off healers, but kinda poor main healers since they HAVE to melee in order to heal.

One of my pet peeves about the DoK class though, and this is just me being a picky bastard, is that their icons are all over the map in appearance. I know it really doesn't matter to a lot of people, but it annoys me to have a hotbar that looks like someone puked Skittles all over it.

I keep hearing how many people rave about the Zealot class. Looking at the poll here on the boards it's also one of the most popular classes. This makes me curious what exactly people like so much about the class. Maybe I'll have to roll one to find out...

I started up a Chosen knowing that adapting to their particular style of play would be challenging. 20 is probably a good enough indication of how the class will play out at the end game and it's both fun and frustrating. I'll freely admit that keeping internal track of all the cooldowns is murder. The 10 second or greater cooldown abilities are all too good to let them off cooldown for too long which sometimes turns the game into whack-a-mole for me.

I'm considering going Black Orc instead (rolling a tank was never in doubt) as that style of play might be better, with the this-then-that-then-that style and might level one to mid teens before fully deciding. The complexity and depth of the classes are admirable but a bit daunting, and the Blorc also has the same annoyingly long cooldowns problem.

But every class is like that right? I'm surprised at how many abilities each class has, and anticipate that the real learning will begin when rank 40 is attained, all the abilities are at our disposal and we learn to pare down what to use.

TLDR : Decided on a tank :p Probably Chosen, as it was first and has more levels.

I didn't like the Squig Herder much at all until level 18, then it became pretty fun. It's still a bit gimp due to the lack of burst dps at this level. Unfortunately (for the squig herder) I decided to try a Marauder one night and have loved it ever since I started it, which is weird since 90% of the time in these games I've played an archer or caster. The Marauder is just too much fun. Love watching his arm change and take on various beast-like shapes and forms. It's to the point where I actually try not to look at higher level Marauders because I don't want the awesome new look spoiled for me.

I have one of each class but the only ones with any time are my Marauder, Squiger, Zealot, and Sorceress.

I have finally decided on Black Orc for my first 40. I love the feel of the class, big tough green ox, and it's so fun role-playing him.
