View Full Version : Vent plus Vista = Crap.
Along those lines, does anyone know of a way that would enable me to use vent on the same comp as I'm running Warhammer? As it stands now, once Warhammer runs my push to talk key stops working and alt+tabbing takes about 5 minutes.

If you are on Vista, you need to run Ventrilo as the administrator.

Knaz -- Do you have a sound card? Do you have a USB headset?
I cannot run both game and vent on my USB headset. It slows everything to a crawl. I play game sound through the speakers (hooked to the motherboard's sound output jack), and do vent over the USB headset.

If you are on Vista, you need to run Ventrilo as the administrator.
This is the fix to your exact problem.
Incidentally, not everyone has this problem. My vent works just fine without doing anything special. However, I clean installed and am already the administrator so... maybe thats it.

I am on the Admin for Vista. I still have the problem stated above. I'm not sure what else to do. I hate getting prompted on vista to approve everything. I'm on the admin login! Grr.

Many people turn the account control off in Vista.
Yes I am on Vista, not by choice... laptop came with it & I'm on TDY right now so I don't have my other comps set up near like normal.
I tried the suggestion to right click the icon & selected "run as administrator" and this solved it, thanks all! Strange how I don't have to do that with any other application, but hey whatever works right? Where's my Vista Chamomile Crash Time Tea?

Looks like you got it resolved :) Just wanted to add -- don't waste key clicks with push to talk!!! Use voice activation, if you play with the sensitivity some it really works very well and just picks up talking, not breathing. Just make sure your headset has a microphone mute button just in case you need to hit it when your wife comes to yell at you for something. . . or maybe that's just me ;)
After raiding for 4 years using push to talk is second nature to me anymore! :p
Besides, I don't always want to be using the microphone when I'm speaking, I might be me muttering about some idiot I'm grouped with...

Run as administrator fixed the prob for my buddy here is the walk through instructions
"At your desktop, locate your Ventrilo shortcut. Right click it, and select "properties". Then select the "compatibility" tab.
Below that you see a check box and drop down list with "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and check mark it and use the drop down list to slect windows XP with Service Pack 2.
Also run this as administrator must be selected also.
Now start Ventrilo and you will see that it functions normally, as expected."

When I first started using voice chat back when my primary games were FPSs, I used voice activation. At some point - I'm not entirely sure what it was - I switched to push-to-talk for to meet a specific need and never switched back. It's not really that I like PTT better, just that I often end up talking to people in real life and having to flip the mute switch on my headset is more annoying than using PTT given how second nature it's become for me. Most people who use it have, at some point, pressed the PTT key while on the phone or otherwise talking to people not on Vent.
Now, that controller that uses brainwave pattern matching as a method of input would be perfect for this. Once you get it down, you wouldn't have to actually press a button but would still avoid the negatives of voice activation. Of course, the further you are from the state you are in when you learn how to use it, the harder it is to get it right. So when you're suddenly getting beat down, you might not be able to get off the message about it because you're stressed. ;)

The down side to voice activated for me is hearing the heavy breathers :)

In my WoW guild, one of the little college kids decided to rant about the raid we just completed to a friend on the phone, naming names and rambling in a delectable soup of angst-ridden profanity.
Unfortunately he had his mic keyed the entire time.
True story! I wish I would have recorded it.
Oh those moments are SO priceless! I wish I knew how to record crap like that to further embarass the involved parties, must like screenshotting that inappropriate mistell someone sends you! :p

And don't forget those loud chewers. One guy I used to run with in EQ2 was an amazing tank, but I could barely stand to group with him because he'd always be chewing his potato chips so damn loud into the mic.
This is a HUGE peeve of my wife's!!! Our last raid leader was a total jerk, he used to announce that he was going out to get something to eat & we should continue without him, then when he got back we'd spend the next 30 minutes listening to him chew & talk with his mouth full on vent.

I work on the phones for a living and have to listen to customers. I refuse to listen to anyone who can't talk with out making a bunch of mouth noises and will mute them :)

Something to note. Windows Vista disables the Administrator account by default. In fact, unless they've changed something the only way to login as the Administrator is to enable it and the only way I've found to enable it is to disable every other account which to me is a bad idea.

One time I left myself connected to vent after a WoW raid... I hadn't setup the push to talk thing yet so anything that was said or done in my bedroom could have easily been heard by anyone in the channel. Luckily the channel was empty (or so I've assumed since nobody ever mentioned what they would have heard and my guildmates were not the type to not mention something as embarassing as this would have been) when my wife and I "went to bed".
That's why push to talk will ALWAYS be used from now on.

I have this cool "feature" (bug?) where sounds of people eating or slurping things gives me goosebumps.. like someone making "mouth noises" with food, a sucker, whatever. I don't know why this happens, but I like it. LOL

I could never stand the eating/drinking noise made when your character eats/drinks in WoW. It's like kissing noises in movies. I hate them.

lol yeah
I could lie and tell you it's a Turkish (which it is) name but the truth is...
I knew a guy on my eq server with that name and he was real joker. We lost touch, so I took his name just for kicks. About 4 years later someone said "dude your name is anus backwards" and I got a big laugh out of it since I'd been using it and never realized it. Originally I just figured it was like Sun with an A added since he was a wizard. You'd be amazed at how long I can go in a game with nobody making the connection or at least talking about. It took my WoW guild almost 2 years before someone said something.
Nowadays I just like the name because it's short and actually sounds like a name...

I built a comp just for Warhammer. Using Vista and push to talk no problem. The only issue I've found is alt+tabbing out to change a channel, seems to be a crap shoot whether or not the game pops back up or the screen freezes and nothing happens. Causing me to restart the game which is damn annoying.

Mackk - Try the "Start" key instead of alt-tab, see if that works better for you.

Alright, I had switched back from a gts 9800 to a gts 8800. The older gts 8800 seemed more stable and really only issue has been this alt-tabbing thing. I'm in the process of redoing everything and see how this fix works. Reinstalled the gts 9800 and downloaded newer drivers. I just wiped the beta version and installing the retail version now. Once thats done, I'll do this fix. Thanks!

I wasn't in game long before the servers came down but I think I'm ok now. Will know for sure with some more game time but it looks like doing this fix and down loading rivatuner to speed up my cards fan has fixed me up.

I used to play with a friend, who took the handle "Yagi". Now he's into the whole Ham/CB radio thing.. and apparently a Yagi is some type of antenna? I dunno.. but anyway... his name backwards is igaY, which was amusing, because his WIFE pointed that out to him in vent one night..
And, for the education of Alanis Morrisette.. THAT is irony
anyway... as Gisli pointed out a coupel of pages back, the "Account Control" feature in Vista, which is enabed by default in new installations, seems to be the cause of Vent not working properly with Vista. To turn it off....
1) Start > Control Panel
2) Select "User Accounts"
3) your user will mostly like be the only one there and should already be an administrator, but if not, locate your account
4) click the link for "Turn User Account Control on or off"
5) uncheck the box for "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer"
6) click OK and eventually reboot.
hope that helps others down the road..
