I suppose it depends on what you mean by "see the other". What specifically are you trying to do?

Have you tried it in the opposite direction? Based on the way you said it, I take it that you copied things from NEW to OLD while being on NEW and are now trying to copy those same things from OLD to NEW while being on OLD. Try mapping OLD's shared directory from NEW and perform the copy while on NEW.

Sounds like a firewall issue. do me a favor and go to each machine and do the following
Start -> Control Panel(or Settings->control panel) in there under windows firewall disable it on both machines.
If this is already done answer the following please
1. How are both machines connected to the internet? are they both plugged into 1 device?
2. is wireless involved on either machine?
3. can you post the ip of each machine(start->run->type in cmd then click ok. in the DOS box that comes up type ipconfig and copy down the output)

they are both plugged into my router/modeom by linksys but new computer sees a lan line device that i don't have connected. I only have one lan line connected on the back of my pc and i have no idea what this extra line is and it won't let me disable it.
no wireless
and what am i supposed to do with this isp?

ok if its asking for a password what you need to do is enable the guest account on the machine you want to move the files To
Also if this is XP you want to disable simple file sharing see the below link

Try going start->run and typing in \\<machine name>
I avoid using network neighborhood or whatever it's called when dealing with machines I already know the name of. Also, try going to a command prompt and typing ping <machine name>
My personal favorite way to transfer files is through a USB enclosure or external hard drive.

Hi, Aoann.
Try this in each computer (I will assume you have Windows)... run CMD so you go to the command line.
Type and execute: ipconfig.
This will tell you what IP, Subnet mask and default gateway each computer has.
The first thing you should make sure is that both computers have the same default gateway and subnet mask... but, of coruse, different IPs.
If you can connect to the net with the router from both computers... most probably they are both well configurated.
But in any case try it.
Write down the IPs.
Then try this: \\IPNumber\c$ (where, of course, the IP number is the IP of the other computer). This will try to access to the C: of the other computer. Greenmind asked you the same but in this case I am asking you to use the IP because your windows may not be resolving the computer names.
If they do see each other, then it should ask you for an user and a password.
The problem maybe in the router (it may not be working as a hub/switch) or in the windows configuration.
The basic test (as someone already asked you to do) is to go again to CMD and then do "ping IPNumber". If the packages reach the destination, then the router is working as a hub/switch.
If the destination is unreachable, then the router is not working as a hub.
Careful, because even when ping works, the router/hub may still be blocking some ports. But if the ping worked, the chances are more in Windows than in the router.
What version of Operating System do you have?
As usual, I apologize for my english.

While it is good for her to test those things, we know that it was working properly before she rebuilt one of the machines, so it is unlikely that it is a router problem.

Tell me if I have this right: Prior to the rebuild, you logged into OLD and set a directory ("OLDshare") to be shared. You then logged into NEW and mapped \\OLD\OLDshare as a drive (Z:, for instance). Then, while still on NEW, you copied files from the local drives to Z, thus transferring them to OLD.

i had the folders for new show up on the old network under the internet. I shared the files thru my router/modeom. but yes. i transfered files into a shared file on new and then pulled them off the shared file on old.

Ok, then sort of the opposite of what I said. I'm trying to be as specific as possible here.
You're trying to find the shared folders using My Network Places or the Browse feature when mapping a network drive? I've always found these to be annoying, so I generally do it manually as long as I know the machine name or IP address.
Start > Run
\\<IP Address> or \\<Computer Name>
Don't use the < or >, those are just there to indicate replacement. Doing this will connect to and list all the shared folders on that machine.
If you want something more permanent, you can right click on My Computer > Map Network Drive. Enter it as \\<IP or Name>\<Share Name>, select the drive letter you want and Finish.
