View Full Version : Collector's Edition and "open" beta

In case you have not already heard this:

Mythic has announced the Collector's Edition. You might want to consider this, even if you don't normally do collector's editions. For one thing, the "open" beta merely means that the NDA is dropped. It does NOT mean that its open to anybody who cares to download the client. In other words, access will be limited. Everyone already in closed beta will roll over to the "open" beta. And I'm sure that a fair number of people will get into beta between now and then. The real kicker is that everyone who pre-orders the CE will get into the open beta, and some other goodies like live access a little bit early and some minor in-game goodies.

http://www.warhammeronline.com/collectorsedition/

They claim there will be 60,000 North American copies of the CE. Its about $80.

For those who might consider it unfair to let CE people get early access to the game: I consider it a clever way to mitigate the craziness of "launch day" by spreading things out a bit. I still remember WoW's release and shudder... and that was a GOOD release, all things considered. My biggest concern is what it might mean to server selection.

I'm usually a sucker for most CE's, though I admit this CE has some really nice annoucned extras. The exclusive "faces" are enough for me to want to get it. I'll defintiely be pre-ordering it, just to get a shot to finally get into the beta.

I got mine last week, sort of. Gamestop preordered me a regular edition and gave me codes. Had to go in yesterday and get that changed and pay the difference.

I am looking forward to getting in before the worst craziness, as there is a "get in early" code as well. If anyone else does the same and we have a server picked, maybe those of us with the CE can do some name camping for the others.

I pre-orderded the CE on the simple fact that with the early access I won't have to spend $15 on shipping just for overnight, since I'm lazy I don't trust pre-ordering from regular stores.

Gisli
03-27-2008, 08:26 PM
I'm fairly certain that you can count on the CE coming not only in time for live, but in fact you should get it BEFORE the EARLY start that comes as a CE perk. In fact, you should be all loaded up from being in "open" beta. So if you view it as saving $15 on shipping, you are that much closer to breaking even as compared to the price of the standard box.

The CE is selling very well, so you might want to consider popping ten bucks down at Gamestop just to reserve one.

Course had to go back and get my code sheet for WAR. But its entered in my account now.

For those of you in Beta already:

You do NOT want to enter you "open" Beta code into your account, since you ALREADY will be in "open" Beta. Mythic has confirmed that Beta testers can give away the "open" Beta code to somebody else. However, you definitely want to hold onto the other two codes!!

Greetings!

We want to make pre-ordering a Collector's Edition as easy as possible. Here are some updates on Pre-Orders from Best Buy and Amazon.com:

Best Buy & Best Buy.com:

Best buy is currently experiencing technical difficulties with their web site and delays in distributing the pre-order boxes to local stores. They are working as quickly as possible to supply their customers with pre-orders, however, at this time many people will be unable to pre-order the Collector's Edition from them.

Amazon.com:

Customers pre-ordering more than one Collectors Edition per order may only be receiving a single set of codes. We are working with Amazon to ensure all customers receive a set of codes for every Collectors Edition they pre-order.

Contacting Customer Support at Amazon may be able to assist you with orders you have placed. Please visit the following link, sign in, and click the phone tab and follow the instructions provided: Amazon Customer Support

For a full list of our pre-order partners please visit: http://www.warhammeronline.com/ce_preorder/

Stay tuned for more updates - Thank you!

Should get you in the right place if not; you need to goto your media library(through the your account thing), and then select bonus items from the downloads dropdown.

I don't know the ins and outs for Gamestop, I don't use them. But there was discussion about this at the WAR betatest forum. IIRC, Gamestop is supposed to send codes later. Several people said they switched to another provider because of that. Amazon appears to be the most reliable vendor right now.

Gisli
03-30-2008, 07:37 PM
They distribute the codes through their media management system. I use Amazon a lot, but didn't know about this before. I even had some "free" manuals for stuff I'd bought from them there! The issue with ordering two copies of the CE is something else entirely.

There is a lot of discussion on the details of how to get the codes from Amazon at the WAR forum. One way to find it is under the "Where's my stuff?" section of your account, click on "View your Media Library" and go from there.

in the code's from mythic for the CE it says:

This code is required to access your Collector's Edition bonus. Keep it in a safe and secure place, and do not share it with anyone.

There are 3 codes. The one you can give away is the Open Beta code. You need to keep secure the other two codes (the in-game goodies and the early access). Look through the long thread on the CE announcement at the Beta forum. I think its near the end, though I'm not sure.

That is just the "open" beta key expiration date. I interpret that to mean "Mythic absolutely promises that open beta won't start before June 10, 2008." I think we can trust that promise. :) I don't take it seriously as a real expiration date for anything.

I imagine that Uska and I could take delivery of a CE if someone wanted one shipped to Europe. Might be hard to get the physical box there in time for the grace period, though. Since not that many here know me, maybe someone else could offer as well.

Well, I went back to Game Stop and asked again if I got a sheet with codes or an e-mail. The same clerk who sold me the pre-order 2 days earlier said "hang on a sec." So, it has occurred to me that all right-thinking players will want to go to the head-start servers, even those who are not actually in the head start. The CE -preorders are going to come from a lot of enthusiastic, knowledgable and interested players and the head start thing is going to concentrate them on the servers that open first. Hurray!

Gisli
04-28-2008, 04:04 PM
Yeah... well... there could be issues here. When WoW started, the initially-named servers were totally a zoo. It could well be that the "head start" servers will end up being overloaded, or perhaps limited in choices in some way (like, say, no RP option). Head-start aside we're going to have the problem of coordinating which server we want to play on, and the "head start" issue may confuse or simplify that process.

What worries me here is my experience with WoW. The WoW start wasn't so pleasant, for a lot of reasons. But its too early to speculate. I don't think at this point we could even have a rational discussion on which ruleset we want, since what we know is so vague. But we *will* need to hash this stuff out once things get closer. I predict chaos and stress. :(

QUOTE (Mark Jacobs)
Folks,

I also heard that the headstart will not include characters either above level one either! You simply stand around and chat and chat and chat and chat. WOOT! FYI, this has just about the same chance of being true as the non-RvR rumor.

Let me be very clear again on the subject. The headstart program is the full game for those who are in there. The only difference is that we won't have all the servers (but we will have all the server types/rulesets) running then since they won't be needed until the game goes LIVE.

Anything else you hear is either BS, trolling or a serious case of misinformation (or would that be disinformation in some cases?).

I bought the War Pre-Order box at my local Best Buy last week for $10. The only thing contained in the box was a sheet with codes for the open beta access, live game head start program and exclusive in-game bonus items. The only thing that confuses me about this Pre-Order box is will I get $10 off the cost of Collector's Edition box once it's available in store? Since I bought this in store, Best Buy didn't take my name or any other information for when the game actually ships. I guess I'll keep my receipt and hope that I get $10 off the price of the real Collector's Edition.

Has anyone else bought the Pre-Order box from Best Buy?

Hmmm... This is the first that I've heard of such an animal. I've only heard about the CE. Given that the CE is $80, that's probably $20-30 over the regular price... so what is the point to this $10 thing?

I predict that any server that Sanger or Gisli choose, will be the server I choose.

Yeah, the WOW launch kinda sucked.
The waiting list sucked.

But no matter how bad it was, playing on the same server as Gisli was well worth any trouble.

I really can't imagine going to another RVR game without Gisli or Sanger leading the charge there.

Ok, here's an update about the preorder boxes that were available at Best Buy. I say "were" because they seem to be sold out at my local Best Buy. Anyway, I went back and spoke to someone about the preorder box. They said that the store will get at least the same number of game boxes as they sold preorder boxes. In other words, if they sold 100 preorder boxes, they will get at least 100 game boxes when released. The 100 game boxes will be held behind the customer service counter for two weeks after release. If you don't pick up your game in the two weeks, they'll put them back on the shelf. If you bought a preorder box, take your original receipt back in and you'll get $10 off the price of the released game. This at least clears up for me as to why Best Buy didn't take my name and contact info when I bought the preorder box.

more update about "head start":

You will have approx 1 to 2 weeks to get your CE box and enter the code on the DvD/CD case to fully active your account. (no confirmed time frame)

aka.. you'll get into open beta.. D/L the client .. have your toon wiped for "head start" (hearing friday to tuesday, aka a full weekend) game releases on a tuesday and the counter starts to enter the codes from the box set to fully active your account

the codes you get with your CE are going to be entered on mythic's website that is NOT up right now for CE. you'll create an account there and then log in with it

Wondering the same thing myself... I know I ordered the CE a few months back as soon as it was available, but I've gotten no mail at all... and I seem to have deleted my original order confirmation (which had no open beta key, I remember that much)... my friends are beginning to wonder if I imagined ordering the game and I'm beginning to wonder that myself since neither EBGames nor Gamestop has a record of my e-mail address (despite the fact I've ordered quite a few things from both :P ). I'm going to keep searching and see if I can figure out WHERE I ordered it... I know I had to search to find an available CE and neither EB nor Gamestop lists them anymore.
