After hyping WAR so much and being so excited, only to be letdown I stayed away from Aion.
So after a few months of playing, do you guys see it lasting?
is it fun?
Can I get my fill of rvr/pve (whatever in aions case). I play MMo's to fight for a cause in rvr/pvp...
I just cant fathom leveling a character to kill computer controlled monsters..I lose interest.

so how is it, and should i get the darn thing?

I'm having fun. I recently upped my subscription from month to month to, buying 2 month chunks at a time.

My play time has been eradicate, and much less than others, due to work. I have only one character that is level 29. With the PVE aspect, the game seems harder that DAOC/WAR. It seems more challenging and difficult. But not too much so. Still it reminds me of the original EQ1. I solo'd mostly to my low 20's. Now the grind seems to reward me more for grouping.

I have done very little PVP. I'm not sure about getting XPs/coin/items from PVPing. But you do get 'realm points' that are used to buy gear.

It seems there are 2 areas that you PVP in. One are 20+ level zone, where enemies can port in through these random 'rifts'. These rifts are level restricted, as well as the number of enemies, and I think only last at most for a couple of hours. There are specific spots that they will appear in, and they are 1 way, and random when they show up. The 2nd area, called the Abyss is a big zone sort of like New Frontiers, where you can might mostly anywhere and over "Keeps". There is a 3rd side that is computer controlled, that is suppose to act as a play balance. When one of the human controlled side dominates with controlling Keeps, then they show up and will defeat the dominating side. How this actually works, I dunno.

I (or most other people with accounts) can send you a referral demo code if you give me your email address.

Unfortunately, the demo accounts are limited to three days, 5 hours of play or level 7, whichever comes first. This means that you don't really experience anything meaningful in the sense of whether you'll like the majority of the game or not.

The pve content is very good. There are a few tough "grind" levels. Early on, you can solo most quests, regardless of class. As you progress, grouping becomes a necessity, so forming good relationships early is key. I have a steady crew I leveled with until about lvl 36..after which 2 people rerolled Elyos (sigh). Have group have leveled with since then and it's made for a pretty quick pace.

In terms of pvp, after lvl 25, abyss is open pvp areas. Expect as a low level to get ganked by higher levels. Taking part in fort seiges/defenses gives you chance at medals, used to buy gear. All kills (pvp/pve) and quests give abyss points, which you can also use to buy gear, items and some select advanced stigmas (lvl 45, 50). I still see this MMO as a game where being ranged dps gives huge pvp advantage. Cleric, templar and sorcs probably most highly sought after classes, with spiritmasters being high priority (some cases necessity) for their debuffs and increased chance of loot drops in pve.

Other pvp includes rifting, which takes you to enemy lands. Access to rifts and forts are timer based, so can't usually just hop on and expect to rift or take part in fort fight.

Crafting is, not unexpectedly, a huge time/coin sink. Despite that...I gather and craft. Materials that I don't use sell well.

wow good description..I was looking at the ranger class.. you didnt mention it at all, are they basically the old frontiers daoc hunter? haha i played one for years and rarely ever had a group!

ranger sounds fun to me, but I dont want to hinder myself to solo play only in a game where leveling sounds to be a grind anyway..

or maybe i will anyway heh im used to it!!

found this on a forum: Rangers can run really fast (22% shoes, 3-5%title, 30% mau form, 18% speed of wind), and help the team catch running targets. Stunning, Knockback, Silence, from Rangers are quite deadly to casters.

seems if you stick to it through the rough part its worth it in pvp?

Ranger is a good class and groups look to add them, do not plan on standing still and fighting mobs tho. As a ranger you need to kite all the time, it is what has turned some folks off from them. Also the first 40 levels or so do not show the true potential of a ranger, so expect it to be abit hard to play and a little gimpy at first.

*** Don't read any of the above if you want to learn how to play the class first hand, it's kinda spoilerish ***

I had great success in the first few levels using the bow attacks, then closing to melee via switch weapon to use the evade/hit tactic along with the soul slash. Only abit later on when I get sufficent bow attacks did I stop using melee for good. It's not too hard to stand and fight using whatever self rooted combat chain you want then hitting snare and arrow strike when the mobs gets too near. Once you really get going half the mobs won't even make it to you before they are slaughtered by lucky crits and knockbacked by the stunning shot chain series. Do invest in mana potions (alchemy) though.

Plus slotting manastone's is a breeze, all physical crit!

How you liking it Vaskl? After the War crash and burn I've been just sitting on the sidelines waiting after playing the open beta of Aion. I'm half tempted to go out and buy it now.

Heyas, Draknar!

This weekend is Double-xp weekend so may be a good time to get started. Also, with Vaskl starting up and a few of my old friends just starting in the last few weeks, there are some leveling up now that you could team up with probably. Also, we are leveing up alts with them along the way and can help some.

Either way, hope to see ya in game.

well. im enjoying it pretty well. Im alot more casual than i was before though, a hour maybe 2 most evenings. I can put in more time on the weekends.
I am only level 11 now, and I thin I picked a hard to level class like i did early daoc with my hunter..so I feel right at home! haha!

Still alot to figure out..not sure what i want to craft..if its even necessary.

I do like that it takes some grind..that may sound wierd, but in WAR i hated the fact that you did quest after quest all the way to the end, and that was the only way to level..

Guess I got spoiled on the jotun groups in raum years back! but I like good ol group killing as fast as you can pull sometimes..
Havent gotten that far yet though.
So far it is really good, I can see myself playing it for a long time to come..
I quit lineage 2 after a month, but this seems much better IMO

hope to see you in there Draknar!
I would send you a trial key, but I havent been a paid sub long enough yet.

Glad you are having fun!

I suggest alchemy for sure, for healing and mana potions and also prehaps handicrafting for physical crit items and bows or tailoring for leather. You can also buy these items off the broker if you prefer of course or ask Kel to help you make something with his army of tradeskill alts!

Just hit lvl 30 with my ranger, still having alot of fun with it =)

i certainly did like the game while i played it, although with certain life altering events, (buying a new house) (school) etc. it became a little more tedious than i was prepared to take on. I hope you are enjoying it, and i miss all my friends in Ravens. I'm hoping that Star Wars will be something worth playing and sticking with, i will probably give that one a whirl. After stopping Aion where i was and feeling a bit behind i just didn't have the will to continue on with it. hope everybody is doing fine!

Well first, deaaaaaath.

If Star Wars is half as addictive/fun as Dragon Age or Mass Effect 2 (same company I believe) should be a hell of a lot of fun.

Least for awhile.
