So now I wait.
Has anyone been able to get into the download and start downloading!?

Now that I have the ability to start downloading I guess I'm just going to have to wait. Alright.... all 80,000 collector's edition folks are trying to download at the same time.... plus did they let in all the other preorders!?

Yeah I was hoping to have more then a week of beta.

As it is... Est. available download date is on Wed 8/20... that's more then 24 hours away. goodness... can't they just mail me my copy I paid for 5 months ago!?

Yeah this pre-order and pre-launch was horrible. I hope they do a better job of managing the game once it goes live.

What is horrible? Compared to what? I think people need to recognize how truly brilliant Mythic's ramp-up effort is here. The simple fact is: THERE IS NO GOOD WAY TO GET HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TO DOWNLOAD MULTIPLE GIGABYTES OF DATA. If you are looking for fast downloads and no problems, you are unrealistic.

So look at what Mythic has done. They are ramping things up beautifully. They are spreading the load out across multiple waves of people, over the space of about a month or so. And while I appreciate that all of you new folks are chomping at the bit to get in, the fact is that they are giving you days to get it done. And even if you DO miss a day or two of the beta activities, that's a whole lot different from missing a day of headstart or live.

I've not experienced a lot of major launches. But WoW was pretty bad. Until launch is over, we don't know how good or bad this will be. But given the reality of the Internet, I can't imagine a better way that Mythic could do things than what they are doing.

I'm a file planet member and the download started right away for me. Might be worth the few bucks for a one month sub.

I went to Stroadt's house and stole it from him in the night.

Woah, back up there Gis!:D

I am talking about the sales and promotion side. I am being told by Best Buy that they are obligated by Mythic not to ship until September and not to email the codes until sometime this week. Other folks got the products right away from other outlets. Some are still in the dark as to when or if they are getting any sort of advance access.

It is just sloppy. There seems to be no consistency as to how they set it up with merchants.

On the other hand, I am happy to see the latest post about this weekend and spots saved for us dummies that bought the CE.

Oh yeah, I can sure understand being pissed at Best Buy. :) I'm glad I went with Amazon. They gave me codes the day I ordered. I just don't care if the CE box comes on time or not! It won't affect my ability to play.

But I do want to say again... I am truly impressed with how Mythic is rolling out access to the game. Given the physical constraints, this is happening in the best possible way I can see to get the maximum number of people up to speed for opening day. Now, it could all end up being a disaster for a lot of people in September anyway. Lots of bad things could happen. But having something like 200,000 people or more already loaded up and ready to roll BEFORE opening day... I find that amazing.

Well, I've experienced quite a few game launches... and I must say, Mythic has a reputation to uphold. DAoC had one of the smoothest launches of MMOs when it originally rolled out all those years ago (compared to the myriad of others with less than stellar launch weeks and even months) and held the honor of best launch of a game I witnessed until City of Heroes went live... so, they'd better be in top form for WAR :P

Of course, a miserable launch still won't stop me from playing, just might scare off potential customer base... :D

heh,

for all my griping, Jacobs and Barnett could come to my house, shoot my computer with a shotgun, light my eyebrows on fire, cancel my credit cards and poop in my cheerios and that would probably not stop me from playing :p

I ended up using Bit Torrent to download it, due to being accepted in to the Closed Beta.

This was my first serious attempt at using Bit Torrent (well, uTorrent I think), and I'm not sure if I had all my settings optimized. It took about a week, or maybe 8 days to download the 9 gigs. :P

There were 2 or 3 times getting a BSOD due to my nVidia LAN connection. Which lost maybe a day and a half, since I'd start up Bit Torrent, go to work, come home to the BSOD, and not knowing when in the day it happened. But I was able to switch over to a different LAN connection on my rig, and got it to work.

I got to play it for a bout 20 minutes last night. Things looked like they were working fine. I'll be on later tonight for a longer session!

I am downloading now as well. It will be nice to have this out of the way well before launch.

Now that NDA is lifted maybe I can learn enough to be able to pick a class. :)

It finally started downloading for me around 330am! I went to bed after that and woke up with it!

Just had to upgrade my windows to get direct x. I'd just bought a new computer for the game!

I downloaded the Download Manager yesterday morning, kicked it off before I left for work, and when I got home it was almost done. Finished up last night and I'm ready to go...in a few weeks...

"I've not experienced a lot of major launches. But WoW was pretty bad"

Ive only been through a few, but Daocs launch was the smoothest ive seen. I was still on 56k back then, loaded up the cd, got a small patch, no lag or delays registering the account, logged right in and played for probably a week before I recall any kind of a patch, and I dont think I ever experianced seeing the servers crash untill there were massive zergs in RvR.

Wows on the other hand was absolutly horrible, the server I started on must of died the first day I think, ended up being down for a good week while everyone I knew scrambled to differnt places making alts waiting for it to come back up. Patching was constant, and the patcher was horrible, lag was bad, constantly waiting on queues to get into the server, crashing, having to wait to get back on and so on, fun fun.

I thought WoW was smooth gameplay/bug wise at launch, their problem was they weren't prepared for the masses signing up pretty much at the same time. They also weren't prepared for communities that organized their move to the same servers together. It was almost like they just assumed everyone would use the recommended server choice and not pick their own server.

CoH and DAoC's launches were the smoothest I've been a part of, but then again they didn't have the huge populations at the start as the more popular games with bad launches had.

I'm personally not going to get to attached to my characters in WAR til a week or so after the public launch, just in case the community decides it needs to move to another server for whatever reason. *knocks on wood*
