Since I just went through the process of building a couple of new systems for Warhammer, here are my final thoughts.

Unless you own one or more of those 12 million dollar houses in La Jolla, California, you probably want to get the most bang for your buck, but still own a capable machine. (Of course, if you do own one of those houses, then simply buy a $6000 xtreme gaming machine and you're gtg.) Otherwise, here's a list of the parts you could get to run Warhammer at an affordable price but with excellent performance.

CPU - don't bother looking at AMD, Intel are better this time around. And the best deal are the Intel Wolfdale duo core processors. They are physically smaller, require much less power, run cooler, and will do the job better than anything for the price. Quad core is technology Warhammer doesn't use. You need quad cores for 3d rendering programs like 3d Studio and Maya, not MMORPGS.

Motherboard - For this processor you need a LGA 775 socket motherboard capable of 1333 FSB. Usually the most overlooked but extremely important piece of computer equipment, I stick to name brands like Asus or Intel. Some people swear by Gigabyte. The Mobo should be around $125 - $175, just don't get one that tries to do too much. I like Sound and LAN on board. That's about it. (If it has graphics on board, I throw it away.) Here's one that would work just fine.

Memory: more is always better and given that it's so cheap, I just wouldn't get less than 4 gigs. That means Windows Vista 64 bit home edition. With the 32 bit version of Vista only about 3.5 gigs can be used. Get the Vista 64 bit and 4+ gigs. "But doesn't Vista suck for gaming, Yoda?" - Nope.

Video Card - the important part for MMORPGS. No other piece of equipment is as important and as confusing thanks to nVidia's retarded numbering system. The good news is only one card makes the most sense right now, the nVidia 8800GT 512mb. Don't get confused, the 9600GT has a higher model number but is not as good. The 8800GS is worse but the 8800GTX and GTX 260 are better but cost about $300 more. So, keep it simple: this one is the right model, but there are other manufacturers.

Other stuff. Unless you have that 6k system, you're not gonna run a 40in monitor. A good 22in Samsung should suffice. Any SATA hard drive with about 500+ gigs is good. Mouse, keyboard, sound, etc. are personal preference. Finally, 500W power supply is more than enough these days, thanks to the new processors.

A little note about routers. In our house we have a Linksys 610N wireless router, 2 desktops, a laptop, and an Apple Iphone. Only the Iphone and laptop run wireless, I would never use wireless for gaming so the desktops are plugged in. I did have some problems with Warhammer until i hardcoded the MAC CLONE address of the desktop plugged into the first router slot. At that point we could have all the machines going in the house without any degradation.

I used newegg.com site for this write-up, but I use ncix.com here in Canada.

So, would you mind suggesting a power supply as well. I just today realized I had an old case around and was thinking of putting something useful in it...:D

I would like to respectfully disagree with your evaluations.

Intel's superior performance is of a negligible amount when it comes to Gaming, min/max O/C will see a difference when it comes benchmarks and that's about it. Not to mention that some of the benchmarking software wasn't using the AMD chips complete power resulting in lower benchmarks. Check www.slashdot.org for the article, may have to go back a bit.

As for Dual/Quad core, if WAR is optimized for dual core, it is for quad core, if it's not for one, it's not for the other. Also, check out the Phenom x3, tricore, nicely priced.

If you do go AMD, get the AM2+ and not the AM2. Gigabyte is a damn fine board with better cooling then ASUS, but ASUS is the still superior if you have the money.

Vista does suck for gaming if you don't know how to tweak it, way too much bloatware is on by default. If you know how to turn the crap off, it's a nice O/S, but, not really needed, XP64 will allow you address greater then 4gigs of memory and comes with less crap on by default and configured properly is comparable to Vista.

As for the old adage for memory of, "more is better", this was true a few years ago. Now days however, anything greater then 4 gigs is truly a waste, you won't need it and looking at the speed of the memory is VASTLY more important. Be smart when looking at RAM, 4 gigs of corsair gaming memory is better then 8 gigs of cheap generic memory.

Nvidia has craptastic drivers, they are a decent card but you would do better to go with a Radeon HD3870 or HD4xxx line of cards, check the performance tests, they are better. Plus ATI has open source drivers and Linux support so you can get even better drivers from some place like Omega Drivers (damn fine gaming drivers, all the meat, non of the fat).

I have a 51" HD plasma TV, my computer looks nice hooked up to it, just saying.

500+ HDD? Do you really need that? I run 320 in a raid array, anything that is going to be "stored" (not accessed regularly) goes on external driver or on media. You HDD is a not a permanent storage solution, it will fail and you will lose everything on it. As for the PSU, 550 is what I would go unless running SLI or Xfire, why? FANS, lots and lots of FANS.

I would not worry too much about the power consumption of fans. Just did some quick math, and it would take about 12 to 15 fans to make up 50W. At that point, I would be more worried about the thing taking off.

Could not agree more. Driver are an issue, but not a deal breaker IMO.

This is the machine I built for WAR and 3d Rendering.

PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006
CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115041

I O/C'd it to 3.4 basically just up'd the FSB to 400 and tweaked voltages

GPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127370

I have 2 running in xfire. ATI > Nvidia

OS - Win Vista 64

RAM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227199

I have 8 gigs.

HD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152098

HS/Fan - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003

Monitor - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001273

MB - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131299

Overall spent about 1.5k but got exactly what I needed not just for WAR but for rendering as well. The one thing I would recommend for everyone though is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826169019 awesome for all games including WAR. Lastly something all gamers should have on their desk is BOBBLE HEAD of some sort :).
