Seriously how does someone so stupid get elected? Oh its new york we are talking about here.....
This reminds me of the retarded ban on smoking at bars here....the local government here pushed this because a waitress complained about getting lung cancer from the smoking...
Ok..... Capitalist country here mcfly.... go find a job in a non smoking place...dummy .... Plus if a bar wants to open a non smoking bar they can... applying to my state here..."Stupid Democrats" I hate the ones we have here in Olympia,wa.
Well this had detrimental effects here to bars....huge dent on there business...and what went up...Our local liquor is controlled by the state....they own the store.... The business boosted there...while local business owners declined..... Blue state of fools..
What's next? A tax for breathing....and a breathing monitor so for every breath you take its 5 cents![]()

I don't really think it's an appropriate comparison. This proposed salt ban is supposed to improve the health of diners by making choices for each individual that only directly affects them. Public enclosed area smoking bans are designed to help non-smokers, not attempt to improve the health of smokers by giving them fewer places to smoke.

Actually it is just lost in the story cause I didn't directly point it out.
Business should have the choice to run how they want to. Smoking is Legal....Salt is Legal right.
So if some place wants to use salted up food....they should be allowed to...we dont have to go there.
So if some place wants to allow smoking... "" "" "" "" "" ""
Last I checked it's a capitalist run country.
Hiding behind the guise for "your health" we are going to impose stupid restrictions on someones business. This should be our responsibility ...Not the governments...and it stinks of socialism (china).
The harm will be the same as it is for smoking bans I described to..is the other point....this will not help business....only hurt it. I think people are grown enough to tell the waiter "Less salt please"....and if you want to salt the hell out of our food...there is a salt shaker on the tables.
Its all about choice of the business how it wants to run...the food sucks cause they don't salt enough...they lose patrons and sink....they prepare tasty good food...business rocks. Capitalism working as intended.
Every time gov sticks it's fingers too far into business and take control....it doesn't seem to help ...but hurt most often...hell I can't even think of one time off the top of my head where it has helped in the last 20 years.
Health or not with my smoking story of local stuff here....It should be a business choice to allow or disallow...it is our choice if we want to give them business. You don't like smoking...go to someplace without...(choice).....those who do smoke...will go there. When one applies for a job...you should obviously know there is smoking allowed there....so if you choose to work in a smoking environment....expect your health to be affected.
Taking away choice and a business freedom is the problem I have. Smoking ban local here on bars...and your salt story...do relate a lot.

Actually, its a democratic country...at least in theory. If enough fools vote for something (or someone) that's what happens.
The bill introduced is obviously idiotic, but I don't think you can compare it to the smoking ban. Salt use is quite clearly a personal choice. If you're concerned about salt in your diet, watch what you eat. However, someone smoking in a public place takes away my choice about whether I want to breathe the smoke or not. I have no choice. Even segregated smoking areas don't stop the spread of second hand smoke.
As for the economic question, it depends on how high up you go to see the picture. Yes, perhaps on a local level there are bars or cafes that lose custom due to the smoking ban. These loses should be offset, though, by increased days at work and lower medical expenses thanks to a lower incidence of smoke-influenced illnesses.

There are two fronts to this thing:
1. private sector being micro managed by government. Private sector can deal with it by letting the market dictate to it. It always has worked this way. Salted foods vs Non....that's up to the business.
the market hates salted foods...they will sink....same goes for smoking.....Business should be able to allow or disallow it and let the market do its thing.
2. Personal responsibility: Gov now wants to dictate what they want us to eat....starting with ban on salt. Instead letting us decide they want to decide for us. When joe schmoe can say no salt on my food....or add to it by a salt shaker.
Smoking applied in your example is not a good one dude.....You can choose to eat a non smoking eatery over a eatery with one. This is the market doing what I think it should....if more people flock to a non smoking diner or bar.....others will follow along due to the market. Or sink in debt and flop over dead.
Since there is a market for both....I think BIG Bro...should stay the hell out of our lives..... Let the private sector market work as intended.... let us decide to be healthy or not.... if I want the government to tell me what to eat, if I can drink or smoke, and how many kids I can have...I would move to China.

Note that the representative's stance is that there could still be salt shakers on the table so if people want to add salt, they could. The problem is that he's apparently ignorant of the fact that this can't compensate for the lack of salt in the cooking process - salting the water when making pasta, seasoning meat before it's cooked, etc. Salt is also integral to baking because it controls fermentation rates and the strength of the protein structures that are formed. If you could just put salt on it at the table and achieve the same results, the bill wouldn't be a threat to the businesses. Still foolish, but not actually a threat.
