I'm a long time member of the SA forums and played with them in WoW beta. There was definitely a tight core that kept things organized and stuck around but the outer parts of the swarm would drop off/return without much fanfare or notice.

I doubt it's much different than people who prefer working at large corporations vs. small private firms. A large company usually has more resources, a greater diversity of workers with whom to interact, and more opportunity to move around. A smaller company offers you potentially more responsibility as you may wear many hats and is more personable. There are drawbacks and benefits to working in both places, the same with guilds.
