"Beautiful Boy" by David Sheff.
It's about a father watching his amazingly gifted son turn into a meth-head. It will rip your heart out.
Strangely, I am also reading "The Road" by Comac McArthy. This one is also a father-son type thingy... but it takes place after an apocolyptic event that is destroying the earth. ADDED BONUS: This author hates quotation marks and entire conversations go on without saying who is saying what =P

I've been reading "The Black Company" books. They are very interesting in that they are mostly told from first person with the main character being the historian/author chronicling the events as they happen.
They are a pretty good read imo.
